What inspires me?

Koen Taselaar

Taselaar inspires me because pretty much every piece of work he's produced is completely hand drawn. As someone who doesn't draw that much, it's incredible to me that someone can sit and draw something on such a large scale, and to the detail and precision he does it to, is really something.

Photography
I think photography and film are two of the best things to come out of the modern world. The idea that you can just take a picture or film of something and still have it ten years later is something that I don't think we could live without these days, and something I certainly couldn't. Seeing old photographs of old cityscapes and seeing how they've changed over the years is something that particularly interests and inspires me. They show the constant change in the world, how everything is always improving and trying to stay contemporary, like when you see modern glass buildings in between old victorian style ones.

Music
Music is anther art form, one which I appreciate just as much as art and design itself. Although it's a cliche inspiration, it is genuinely where some of my inspiration. There hasn't been a time within the last five years where I've gone more than a day without listening to some sort of music. Listening to music can bring back memories and I think that's a powerful thing for inspiration.

Travel
The world is full of culture and a lot of different styles and inspirations. Travelling around the world to be able to see all the different things in different countries is something that interests me, and from visits abroad, it is pretty amazing to see how different the cultures in countries are compared to here at home, and other countries.

Pop Art
Pop Art is where my first original interest in art happened. Seeing Roy Liechtenstein's close up, on such the large scale it is, is what made me decide to think of art as a bit more than a lesson at school. Pop Art has been a constant influence throughout my works for as long as I remember, and is always the first thing I look at to get preliminary inspiration and ideas from. Although it hasn't been featured in much of my recent work, I still use it as a base for my original art interests.
